SHORT STORIES OF GOKARNA,
LAND OF LEGENDS

A soul born in Hindu religion has to fulfill four goals (Chaturvidha Purushartha) and they are Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. There are three holy places which help to expedite fulfillment of Chaturvidha Purushartha, namely Pushkar, Gandaki and Gokarna and their supreme deities are Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

Gokarna isa Siddhi kshetra (a realm which offers Spiritual and Supernatural powers through penance) , a Mukti Kshetra (Death Liberation realm) and a Bhaskar Kshetra ( Sun realm).

References to Gokarna are found in epics such as Ramayan, Mahabharat, Gurucharitra. It was the radiant Sage (Rishi) Samvartakeshwar who wrote a detailed book on this ancient, holy and religious place called as Gokarna Purana. Let us first bow to Sage (Rishi) Samvartak, son of Agni.

Let us search chapter wise traces of mythological legends appearing in Gokarna Khanda through Shivalingas (Cylindrical Existence), Tirtha Kundas (Ponds), Hermitages (Ashram’s) and Temples etc. found in Gokarna realm.

With the increasing population and diminishing faith in religion the Samvartakeshwar Linga is lying unnoticed in one corner of Gokarna Mahabaleshwar Rath Yatra Marg. It is this Samvartakeshwar Linga whose prayer can wash sins of seven births of the worshipper. This Shivlinga is situated opposite Markandeya Hermitage on rear portion of a house.
